For the presentation, we divided the slides equally amongst ourselves:

  • Intro slide - Puneet Sharma

  • Context slides on The GPGP - Tanya Menadue

  • Design Intent slide - Gigi Lapid

  • Materials and Tools - Harish Aravind

  • Implementation slide - Jennie Franklin

  • Outro slide -Puneet Sharma

Here's a short video clip of "Into the Gyre" in action:

As a part of the presentation, we also included a little display of sustainable alternatives (e.g. metal straw, fruit and veg bag, solid shampoo, etc.) to show how our project could potentially benefit local sustainable social enterprises as well.

Overall, our team was very happy with the outcome of our practical project.

The full presentation is available here. The strategy report is viewable here.

My Final Thoughts

“Into the Gyre” is just a small drop in a vast ocean of environmental initiatives that aim to address The GPGP. The project is a testament to how current and emerging technological and societal trends may be used to forward a good cause and hopefully, incite a movement that will positively influence and impact future generations.

As a designer, I personally enjoyed working on this project mainly because we had such a great team (best one I've had at QCA, so far). Everyone contributed equally to the project and focused on playing up each other's strengths. Of all the enhanced design tools we had used for this project, I think the one that I will be exploring more in the future would be the laser cutter as I potentially see myself producing functional sculptural pieces using Adobe Illustrator.

In the larger scheme of things, I do hope that this project did make others (maybe even just the folks in the class) realise the gravity of The GPGP and made them rethink how they consume plastic products. It's a small step but it's definitely a start.
